fuckyeahstrangemythology: Yuki-Onna AKA: Yuki-Onago (Snow Wench), Yukinba (Snow Hag) Origin: Japan History: A tall woman with long black hair and pale/transparent skin, sometimes with a white kimono or sometimes naked, she’s thought to be a ghost of a woman who died on a snowy winter’s night. She appears during snowstorms, full moons, or whenever it is winter. In specific regions in Japan, she comes on fixed dates such as New’s Year’s Day, and January 15th. She’s a calm silent kind of spirit, being a good representation of the snow where she dwells. But also she can be violent and ruthless, like the snowstorm that most likely took her life. Before the 1800s to 1900s, she was portrayed as a completely evil spirit, but then writers began to romanticize her story. Making her out to be a poor tortured soul. Stories tell of how she married a man she had not killed, making him promise not to tell of her existence to any human. Later on in life, he told of his encounter to his wife, who revealed to him she was the Yuki-onna. She couldn’t kill him though, because he was a good father and since she wasn’t technically human, she didn’t count. In another one, she falls in love with a man, and melts away in the springtime, because she did not have the heart to tell him of her true nature. What’s so strange about her? Don’t let her gorgeous looks fool you, all she wants is to see you die and kidnap some misbehaving kids. She’ll show out out of the blue, looking like a victim of the storm, sometimes holding a baby. Once you get close enough to her, or are lost yourself and stumble upon her, she’ll use her ice to freeze you to death. In other tales, she’ll seduce a lost man and not only kill him, but drain him of all his blood. What if I see her? A good thing to do is to see if that woman has feet, she’s said to be footless. If she’s footless, run away. There’s no better thing to do. If you’re lucky, she might let you go if you’re young and beautiful. But if you are neither of those two, you’ll probably wind up dead.
